Flow cytometry is usually performed in laboratories following work-up of blood and other samples containing cell material by skilled laboratory personnel. In this movie Bernard Jukema (group Prof Koenderman, UMCU) explains the principles of flowcytometry and demonstrates mobile automated flow cytometric analysis ‘in the field’. The advantage of this approach is that it avoids immuno-activation that occurs inside a blood collection tube, which may take place rapidly and influence research results.

Flow cytomety is often used as a diagnostic tool. Imagine what it would be like if your GP would have access to a flow cytometer in their practice, or if the technology would be miniaturized further so that it can be used for real-time monitoring of, and by, patients.
